Loudon Wainwright III: Last Man on Earth

Loudon Wainwright III’s "Last Man on Earth" is a poignant, generous and at times lighthearted look at some of the hardest challenges a person can face at once: the passing of a parent; realizations of one’s own mortality and the loss of a girlfriend during all this. Wainwright has long written songs with wry and humorous undertones, but this CD is shorter on that aspect of his craft and more full of appreciation and personal revelations about the people in his life and the person he’s become.

Last Man on Earth
Loudon Wainwright III says the CD is about loss – of his mother, father and most recent relationship – and how these people filled his life.
Such a short word and yet so much happens there – and that’s enough to prompt Wainwright to write a song about it.
Title Cut
Well, it wouldn’t be a Loudon Wainwright III CD if there wasn’t at least one ‘novelty’ song.
Wainwright says he made sure songs about serious subjects weren’t overly heavy or depressing.
